Question: 731-1512
I rotate my tomatoes, peppers and potatoes each year. What else can I put into the cycle? Melba Lee, Taylorville, IL

Mort's Answer:
Tomatoes and peppers will pull out the same nutrients with a higher percentage of phosphorus. Leafy vegetables absorb more nitrogen proportionally. Root crops will deplete potassium. Potatoes are an equal opportunity user. You could add lettuce for early harvesting. Beans , peas and other legumes actually replenish nitrogen by taking it out of the air. If you can add aged manure each year, you will build a soil that can house all the essential elements. Rotation lessens the need for copious amounts of chemical fertilizers
