Question: 511-1411
My Pussy Willows are full of buds. Can I make cuttings now? Should I cut back my Rhododendron that has been eaten by deer? Tom, Preston, CT

Mort's Answer:
When you cut off the chewed leaves soon, be sure not to cut off swollen flower buds.  Paint any chewed bark areas with tree wax or spray.  You could use hot pepper and soap as a deterrent. You can take cuttings from your Pussy Willow now before the leaves sprout. Cut eight inches off the ends of branches to make your cuttings. Make acute angles at the bottom with a razor knife. This will expose more cambium inside the bark. Make a box about six inches deep and fill with coarse sand. I would take about fifty cuttings and remove all the buds except two at the top. Place the bottom two inches in the sand and put them two inches apart. Your box should be with a few feet of the outside spigot. Mist the cuttings every day. Do not pour water on the soon to be plants. They should be ready to plant in the fall.

Question: 990-3213
Can I make new plants from pussy willows by putting them in water? Dottie, Griswold, CT

Mort's Answer:
You can extend the live of the Catkins by putting them in a vase of water. It would be easer to make new plants by taking eight inch terminal shoots and put them in sand. Cut the bottom of the shoot at an acute angle and place them two inches into a six inch deep box. Place the box of sand near the spigot. This will allow you to moisten the sand every day. Soak the box the first day and follow up with the daily sprinkling. It could take 30 days for them to root.
