Question: 1405-417
Can you suggest the best way to grow coleus for mass production? Steve, Pocono Mountains, PA

Mort's Answer:
Coleus is a plant that is regenerated by cuttings in greenhouses. It roots quickly in distilled water. Your original crop can be grown indoors from hybrid seeds. A plastic wrap over a tray of sphagnum moss will produce plenty of plants for growing indoors. Transplant them into individual pots. The new plants can be cultivated outdoors around May 15 in zone 6. These mother plants can provide the cuttings for new indoor coleus but will get woody after two years of growth. Because they are both an excellent sun and shade plant, you will develop a continual rotation of varied color combinations.
