Question: 174-
What is the best care for Christmas Fern? Celia, North Kingston, RI

Mort's Answer:
Christmas Fern stays a dark green throughout the winter as a houseplant. Polystichum acrostichoides has leathery leaves up to three feet long and three inches wide. Its brown stalk at the bottom supports sterile and shorter non sterile fronds, which are on the outside. Most folks do not prune the plant, although it can be rather large especially as a hanging fern. A little lime added to the soil will increase vitality. They prefer shady moist soils both indoors and outdoors. They will do better in the company of other Christmas ferns outdoors. These very hardy plants are in the woods from New Brunswick, Canada to North Carolina.
