Question: 541-1911
What is that beautiful purple flower in bloom at this time? Is it an Azalea or a Rhododendron? Bruce, Norwich, CT

Mort's Answer:
Many botanists now put all of them in the Rhododendron genus. Many old timers and myself continue to differentiate between the two. PJM rhododendron may have been crossed with an upright Azalea. I would guess A. mucronulata. I was not able to get an answer from the breeder years ago. PJM rhododendron gets about 4-5 feet ,is a very hardy evergreen and has a beautiful bronze fall foliage. I love to see it mixed with forsythia in groupings. They both help me spring into spring.
