Question: 598-3311
I have seven upright arborvitae that have a yellow swollen seed. Is it something that I should remove and can I trim now? Ruth, Lisbon, CT

Mort's Answer:
Be sure to use sharp shears at this time of year. Those seeds will either turn brown shortly or will swell and remain yellow. On the oriental arborvitae they will stay green, if they are infected with aphid eggs. Trimming now will remove most of the seeds, infected or not, because they are generally on the ends of the leaves. If they turn brown that is the natural color of uninfected seed pods.
